National Population Commission calls for support as nationwide enumeration area demarcation begins

The National Population Commission, NPC, on Thursday, called for support from Nigerians to ensure the success of the nationwide enumeration of demarcation areas preparatory to the next population and housing census.

Addressing a press conference in Ilorin, Kwara State to flag off the exercise, the NPC Federal Commissioner for the state, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Gidado, said the commission will continue to explore all means to avoid the pitfalls of the past.

“To this end, we solicit the support of all Nigerians as we embark on what is obviously going to be massive enumeration area demarcation activities across the nation,” he stated.

The commission called on state governors, security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to provide security, logistics support and conducive atmosphere for functionaries to perform.”

ND REPORTERS reports that the eleventh phase of the enumeration area demarcation will be conducted in 95 local government areas spread across the 36 states of the federation.

The commission said aside adequate logistic arrangements put in place for effective deployment of personnel and materials, necessary measures have also been put in place to ensure that field functionaries are properly kitted and trained to observe all safety protocols as prescribed by the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 throughout the exercise.

The commission explained that the information from the output of the exercise is useful for development planning and efficient distribution of infrastructural facilities and the provision of socio-economic services.

Aside providing invaluable information for security surveillance and crime detection, prevention and facts regarding household distribution obtainable from the exercise, it could be used to ameliorate the adverse effects of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, through a more systematic contact tracing and distribution of palliative, the commission added.

It further disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is also into a special arrangement with the population commission in which the NPC is assisting to create digitised maps of INEC registration areas (wards) for the first time as part of the EAD, a move that will positively impact future elections.
