Ensure Compliance to Gas Flare Regulations – Pat Ifon

In his remark, Ifon who was represented by his wife, Dr Elsie Ifon, stated that all available data and information indicates the negative effects of gas flaring on the environment and humans.

He narrated that his Federal Constituency being the host of oil exploration companies are facing the direct negative impact of gas flaring with attendant environmental, economic and health challenges.

“The difficulties faced by local communities from gas flares are a sufficient justification for ending gas flaring practice in the country”

He stated further that the Federal Government had in 2017 published the National Gas Policy, with the Flare Gas Regulations, and that the Regulation provides a legal framework to support the government’s plan to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions through flaring and venting of natural gas, and also provides for steep penalties and fines to be paid by offenders with the aim of de-incentivizing the practice of gas flaring.

Ifon noted that if government ups the ante in ensuring compliance of this policy and regulations, and as well place methods of disposal, collection, and recycling techniques for Plastic Waste, the economic gains will be laudable.

“Government should up the ante in ensuring oil exploration companies adhere strictly, without compromise, to the policies/regulations of gas flaring” – He added.

The Member of Parliament who also recieved an award of excellence on grassroot empowerment to youths in the state, which was presented by the State Chairman of NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk, thanked the Federated Chapel for upholding the tenets of journalism practice and for finding him worthy for the award, stating that the award is an energy that will spur him to do more on the course of his representation.
