Ifeanyi Udeze, a former Super Eagles defender, has told head coach, Gernot Rohr, to allow Kelechi Iheanacho lead the team’s attack ahead of Victor Osimhen against Benin Republic and Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifiers.
Rohr’s men will travel to Cotonou on Friday for their matchday five ties against Benin in Porto Novo on Saturday.
The Super Eagles will also tackle Lesotho next week Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
But Udeze believes Iheanacho’s brilliant goal-scoring form for Leicester City in the Premier League and recently his two goals against Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-final last week is an indication that the former Manchester City star must lead Nigeria’s attack ahead of Osimhen.
Recall that Osimhen has been in and out for Napoli for a while because of injuries and COVID-19, which has slowed down the pace of his game.
“I think Iheanacho should lead the team in our next two games [against Benin and Lesotho ]because he has been playing and scoring for his club side lately, and I believe he will score again for us,” Udeze told ESPN.
Meanwhile, Nigeria leads the Group L qualifying group with eight points after four games while Benin trail in second place with seven points and Lesotho are at the bottom of the group with two points.
