Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has expressed disappointment over the decision of Nigerian coach, Gernot Rohr, to drop him from the Super Eagles squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON, qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho.
Akpeyi only managed to make the Super Eagles standby list, while Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and John Noble received the nod for the fixtures against Benin and Lesotho from Rohr.
Rohr’s men will tackle Benin in Porto Novo on Saturday and face Lesotho three days later in Lagos.
Akpeyi while expressing his sadness said he was not contracted to the Nigeria national team, adding that he just needs to focus on his club side.
“The truth is that I’m concerned. Nothing surprises me in football anymore because I have been in the game for long to understand what it is all about.
”All I just need to do is to focus on my clubs because I am not contracted to the national team. I need to focus on where I have a contract and do my best.
“National team is open to everyone and it is a privilege to be called up into the national team.
“And again, whoever is in charge of the national team can decide to call anyone he likes, and I need to support the national team,” Akpeyi told Brilla network.
