Federal University of Science and Technology, Akwa Ibom State; EFC Media Writes President Buhari on Why Institution should be sites in Eket Federal Constituency
We, media professionals from Eket Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom state hereby express our appreciation to the Federal Government over the approval for the establishment of a new University of Technology in Akwa Ibom State. However, while we celebrate this noble gesture, we find it expedient to state categorically that this new federal institution should be sited in any of the four local government areas of Eket/Esit Eket/Ibeno/ONNA Local Government Area, the core communities from where over 40 percent of oil reserves of the country is explored and exploited.
Mr. President, it may interest you to note that for over five decades, the people of this communities, the most peaceful and accommodating oil producing areas in the country, have not been privileged to have any semblance of a federal presence, despite their huge contributions to the federal revenue of the country.
Mr. President, you will be shocked to note that despite Eket Federal Constituency being the largest producers of crude oil, monetized in various fronts and processed to develop our country, it is left without any federal attention, poor roads, no Federal oil and gas related agency, nothing from the Federal Government to convincingly bolster the hope of indigenes, whose air and waters are polluted, and are facing threatening hazards from degradations caused by oil exploration and exploitations.
Despite this gross marginalization and exploitation, the people of this region are astute enough to maintain peaceful coexistence, supporting the Federal Government to realize set goals in other regions from the proceeds of her natural resources, not minding the undeserving ill treatment that has soured into the marrow of her indigenes whose life expectancy has dropped to an all time low, owing to the destruction on their natural economic and agricultural potentials.
Apart from being the core oil producing communities in the state, Eket Federal Constituency is also the headquarters of one of the three senatorial districts in the state. It is however the only senatorial headquarters with no federal or state owned tetiary institution. While the University of Uyo of Uyo Senatorial District is in Uyo federal constituency, the Federal Polytechnic,Ukana in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District is in Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency, it would also be logical to have a central location for the University in Eket Senatorial District. Having settled the three senatorial districts with Federal Tertiary Institutions, it is pertinent to state that for justice, equity and fairness to be enshrined in the sharing of infrastructure, those facing the direct negative impact of oil exploration (Eket Federal Constituency) should at least be taken into consideration.
Beyond the aforementioned considerations, it would be worthy of note that in Eket Senatorial District, the other two federal constituencies, Ikot Abasi and Oron have already been blessed with Tetiary institutions , the Akwa Ibom state University in Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi federal constituency, and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, Oron.
It is worthy of note that in Eket Federal Constituency, schools like Government Secondary School, Afaha Eket in Eket Local Government Area, Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo in ONNA Local Government, National High School, Etebi in Esit Eket, are among several schools built to standard with sophisticated university structures. Any of these schools could easily be converted for the purpose, with the facilities only expanded to accommodate all the requirements of a federal institution. The approved Four billion naira take off grant by Mr. President could then go a long way in the purchase of facilities for startup modules in approved disciplines in the institution and not necessarily for structures.
Eket Federal Constituency deserves a federal infrastructure, if the Federal government has failed to bring to the zone, operational offices of federal oil and gas agencies, which would have opened up the areas for chains of development, the siting of the recently approved University is justifiable by every stretch of imagination.
For the avoidance of doubts, Eket Federal Constituency Media Professionals comprise print media publishers, journalists, online media publishers, photo journalists, media advisors, and other categories of media workers in the federal Constituency.
On this note, the leadership and entire members of Eket Federal Constituency Media Professionals (ESDMP), passionately appeal to Mr. President that the approved Federal University of Technology be cited in one of the local governments in the core oil producing communities of Eket Federal Constituency, to reassure the people that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is poised to correct the several decades of injustices on our people, and ensure the development, maintenance and sustainability of this goose that lays the golden eggs for the nation.
