Some men in military uniform on Monday arrested some youths who were protesting the dilapidated nature of the Akpajo section of the East-West road in Rivers State and the Aleto bridge in the area.
The officers stormed the protest ground and arrested some of the protesters after they blocked the roads with trucks and heavy-duty vehicles and prevented vehicular movement in the area.
The action of the protesters had caused heavy gridlock on the road, leaving road users stranded.
ND REPORTERS gathered that those who were picked up by the security agents were those involved in the deflation of tyers of the trucks used in blocking the road.
One of the leaders of the protest, Prince Okereke explained that the protest was staged over the “bad state of the road”.
“We have sent a message to the federal government and the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, it is unbelievable, even if we are a minority in Nigeria, we don’t have those to speak for us but God will speak for us”.
“The road is something that has destroyed all the track roads in the community. That is why we are calling on the Federal Government to remove us from this mess”.
He threatened that the protest will continue until the minister of Niger Delta Senator Godswill Akpabio comes to address them on why the road has been left in its present state.
