N18m up for grabs as 3rd Akwa Ibom Youth Sports Festival kicks off
A total of eighteen million naira will be up for grabs at the third edition of Akwa Ibom State’s annual all-encompassing sports championship for all Primary and Secondary schools in the state tagged Akwa Ibom Youth Sports Festival (AKSYSF).
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, disclosed this while addressing a Press Conference, Wednesday, in Uyo.
Mr. Uko who described the event as a ‘cardinal programme’ in Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration also urged participating schools to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, equity and fair play, stressing that the aim of the Games is to lay a ‘solid foundation’ for the sports fortunes of youths of the state.
According to the Commissioner, this year’s championship will adopt last year’s format where the ‘Akwa Ibom Olympics’ as the sports meet is fondly called was divided into two categories; Under-15 for primary schools and Under-17 for secondary schools.
The sports boss used the occasion to present a cheque for the sum of One Million Naira, on behalf of Governor Udom Emmanuel, to teenager Imaobong Nse Uko for her heroics at the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abuja where she won the women’s 400m final in a junior category record time of 52:35 seconds. The Government largesse to Nse Uko came complete with a state government scholarship throughout her secondary school education.
Highlights of the event were the presentation of cheques to last year’s prize winners.
Receiving a cheque for N10m on behalf of Team Oruk Anam who came first, was the council boss, Atuekong Ubong Idiong while a cheque for N5m was presented to Elder Imoh Okon on behalf of Team Uyo who came second last year. The Vice Chairman of Itu LGC, Emem Ekpanya, who stood in for Itu council Chairman was presented a cheque for N3m on behalf of Team Itu which came third.
Also present at the event were the Commissioner for Education, Professor Victor Daniel Inoka, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Coach Lawrence Iquaibom, a board member of Akwa Ibom State Sports Council, Coach Aniedi Dickson and the representative of the Chairman of State Secondary Education Board, Barrister Goddy Awah.
While the prize monies at this year’s Games remain unchanged from last year’s, the third edition of AKSYSF will commence with the Local Government Qualifiers from April 24 to May 11 while the State Finals have been scheduled for May 19 to May 24.
