Youths, Council Chairman, Security intervene at Atabong Bridge Fire
Today, Atabong Bridge was heated for over 4 hours by fire from a destroyed boat by soldiers of anti-bunkering team.
It took the intervention of able bodied youth supervised by the Chairman of Eket, Hon. Frank Archibong, the Nigeria Police and Road Safety for the burning boat to be pushed away which almost caused a total collapse of the bridge.
Also, there was visibility problem by road users and vehicles as many couldn’t cross the bridge due to inability to see the other side of the road which almost caused accident.
According to eye witness, the soldiers went through the Atabong Bridge water channel and interrupted bunkering activities by setting the entire boat with drums of petrol ablaze. The water then forced the burning boat to movement which finally berth at the bridge.
All effort to quench the fire proved abortive until able bodied youth deployed techniques to push the boat away from under the bridge after several hours.
Meanwhile, the scene attracted hundreds of people and passersby who came in droves to watch after observing huge smoke from a distance.
As at the time of filing this report, the fire was still raging and may take more hours to quench.
