Jacob Esuene Inaugural South-South Squash Tournament ends in Eket
The Jacob Esuene Inaugural South-South Squash Tournament came to an end over the weekend in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Squash fans and sport enthusiasts were treated to a 3 days superlative and exciting squash competition, that started on 1st.- 3rd. August 2019, and played simultaneously at Jacob Esuene Sports Club and ExxonMobil Squash Hall, all in the Oil City of Eket.
The event featured under 10yrs, under 15yrs, Men, Women and Veterans categories.
Ten (10) Clubs across South South region were invited to compete at the inaugural edition;
Canaan Club of Calabar,
Government House Club-Asaba, others were
Police Officers Mess Club-Benin and Yenegoa Club-Bayelsa.
Top officials from State Government, Local Government, Exxonmobil and Business Communities, all graced the occasion.
Speaking with the Press, the Chairman of Jacob Esuene Sports Club and the Organizer of the tournament, Engr. Iniobong Esuene said the tournament that started last year, was restricted to only Akwa Ibom Clubs, but today, on the inaugural edition, has been extended to the entire South-South Geo-Political zone of Nigeria.
On the future of the tournament, the Chairman of Jacob Esuene Sports Club was very optimistic that very soon, he would be campaigning for National Competitions and ultimately to International level.
He said the game of Squash has been of tremendous boost to his health.
He confided that he had a high-blood challenges; and without taking drugs, the situation greatly improved due to his consistent engagements in sporting activities, majorly Squash.
Engr. Esuene who was physically elated also told the Press team that it was a thing of joy for him to see the young kids, some 5yrs old swinging their rackets, hitting the ball instead of the air. He said it was the enthusiasm in the kids that gave him the courage to push them forward, and exposing them to competitions like this.
He said as early as 6am, the kids would be at the court for the daily training. In just 5yrs time, the kids would make name in Squash world. He prayed.
Also speaking, the Pillar of the Esuene’s Family, Her Excellency Senator Helen Esuene, a two-time Federal Minister for Environment and Health, said, at early stage, she introduced her children to sporting activities; starting with Table tennis, Badminton and Squash.
The beautiful and dutiful Senator also informed the Press that, the Squash Club is named after the Late husband, Brigadier General Udoakagha Jacob Esuene, an erstwhile Military Governor of then South Eastern State. Now splitted into Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
On hand to witness the tournament, was the President of Nigeria Squash Federation, NSF, Engr. Boye Oyerinde,
Nigerian Olympic Heavy Weight lifting Champion,
National Male Squash Champion , Representive of the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Akwa Ibom State,
Former Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Bassey Essien,
an undefeated Women National Squash Champion, Business Class, Politicians and hosts of Others.
The 2nd edition of the tournament would be held at the same venue and same date, next year, and promised to be very exciting.
